The School doors have
opened anew, Kids are walking by our homes on the way to
neighborhood schools, buses are buzzing by chocked full of
smiling and expectant faces, and we are renewed with the
dreams for "the future of the world" in our students, our
neighbors children and our own
children. Glenn, Jan, Omega, Peggy and Quintina are
thankful for this promise of faith and education. Our hopes
and dreams are with you as you take all those you love into
your care, as parents, teachers, volunteers, administrators,
pastors, neighbors and "intentional adults" in the lives of
kids.
The weather is hot in
Texas and our hearts across this great nation are warmed by
the joy of living in this great land of caring
people.

Endowment ARK for Parents Project
Rockwell
Fund Aldine/Spring ISD Drop-Out Initiative
Major
Elementary and Northgate Crossing Elementary both of Spring
ISD hosted an ARK for Parents, facilitator training for a
total of fifty-two teachers during the month of August.
Teachers offered to spend an eight hour day of their personal
time to become proficient at facilitating ARK Parent Groups on
their campus. These teachers experienced a transformative day
that was both encouraging and enlightening. As one educator
said, "I thought we were just going to be practicing what we
saw on a video taped lesson. I didn't realize that the process
would actually change my own thinking. As a parent myself, I
know the parents of my students will benefit from this
program. It is unlike anything that I have ever experienced."
Another teacher comments, "Our school has always offered
academic support for parents but ARK takes it a step further
by offering support for the emotional well being of the
parents and family. In fact, ARK is beneficial for all
involved, including the facilitators."
The
ARKGroup has been invited to speak to over one thousand Aldine
teachers, counselors and administrators as they collaborate
and formulate plans to begin the Drop-Out Initiative funded by
Rockwell. A select group of middle school teachers in both
Aldine ISD and Spring ISD will participate in one of four
scheduled training dates in September. After becoming
certified, these leaders will bring back the process to their
individual campuses and teams. Teachers are excited about
connecting and collaborating with one another to develop a
stronger more supportive relationship with students, parents
and peers.
Aldine
ISD Transportation Department sets the benchmark for other
districts by providing ARK for Bus Drivers as part of their
extra-miler project. The ARKGroup provided staff development
for 700 bus drivers and other transportation personnel.
Thirteen bus drivers are currently in the process of becoming
ARK facilitators for their peers. The drivers are amazed at
how the process has already impacted their ability to problem
solve and peer mentor.
AVANCE
Head Start Centers continue to offer ARK support for parents
and teachers. Sixty new teachers will be trained during the
month of September to provide both ARK for Parents and ARK for
Teachers groups in their school communities. Clearly, great
things are happening because of their commitment to educating
the whole child and family.

Nahum Calixto and his
Children
Mr. Nahum Calixto is a father success
story. Nahum is an AVANCE parent who also received ARK for
Parents training. He was among the only Spanish-speaking parent
group ever trained as an ARK facilitator and was the only
dad in attendance.
Nahum was referred to AVANCE-Dallas as
a referral from the Texas
Department of Famil and Protective Services after
being caught driving with alcohol while his children were
in the car.
He has greatly benefited from the
many AVANCE classes he has attended and credits these
classes for having taught him the importance of spending time
with his children, talking to them, helping with homework and
planning family activities.
The ARKGroup was thrilled when the
AVANCE coordinator of the Pleasant Grove quadrant
invited the ARK staff to provide ARK for Parents
training to this AVANCE parent group. The ARK
parent program focused on the relationship between parent and
child, based on unconditional love, as the foundation of
a child's positive self-concept and the thrust toward a
successful personal, academic, social, professional and
spiritual life.
Nahum's
desire is to lead an ARK for Parents group in his
church. He wishes to connect the lessons learned from
both AVANCE and ARK for the benefit of other
parents.
He
is now able to share his convictions and experiences with
others who seek the avenue to successful parenting and
successful children.
The
ARK staff salutes Nahum Calixto and is thankful for his
commitment.

What Kindergartners'Parents Can Do To
Help
Work on their
self-esteem - Give your child lots of affirmations,
lots of hugs and make sure they know each day as they go to
school that you love them unconditionally. Don't let
them pick up on your anxiety.
Build a relationship with
their Teachers - Let the teachers know that you want to help
and support in the education and care of your child.
Ask open ended questions
when your child gets home from school - "Tell me your most
favorite thing that happened today". Make sure your child
knows you expect them to do well and spend time letting
them go over their accomplishments. Help them with the
things they are learning to do.
Look for red flags - If
your child does not want to go to school, if it is hard to get
them out of bed, spend some time exploring their feelings and
challenges. When a child claims up, something is going on you
will want to explore.

Just
Musing -The Happiness Debate
Continues
My
thanks to Nick Powdthavee, author of "The Happiness Equation"
for some of these thoughts. You should pick it up if
your looking for an excellent read.
Our scholarly economists and
psychologists have combined their efforts in recent years to
show us the secrets of happiness. We continue to read studies
and research projects which show that happiness determinants
include the small effect of money, the great effect of
marriage and friends and the massive impact of
personality. It has
been my observation that the extremely good news of winning a
lotto and the extreme sadness of a loss of a family member
rarely affect happiness for more than several years. Happiness
is a "state of the mind" and we all struggle to personally
determine what "state of mind" means to us. Then we have
many studies that reflects on happiness as a determinant of
success in job performance, marriage, relationships and future
health. Likewise, as parents and teachers the children
in our lives are living within the same framework and
environment we present and they too reflect our attitudes on
happiness as well as their own perspectives as they grow into
adulthood.
One thing we should consider; the
implications of our actions when we are with our
children and students determine a child's ability to
experience happiness and possible their successful in school,
work, family and in the world of communities.
You
should read this book and draw your own conclusions.
I
am grateful that Nick put his thoughts to paper and that you
gave me a few minutes to reflect, if not you, who,and if
not now, when.
Just Musing,
Bill
