Lesson 2: Coaching Children to Manage their Feelings
A study conducted at the University of Washington in Seattle shows that the way parents deal with both their own emotions and their children’s emotions may have a major effect on their children’s physical health, academic achievement, and emotional well-being. The study suggests that, as parents teach their children how to understand and manage their emotions, the children experience less stress and are able to focus better in school. As a result, the children have longer attention spans and are able to score higher on math and achievement tests. The children of emotionally-skilled parents also appear to have less behavioral problems in school, at home, and with their friends.
