Lesson 6: Instilling Responsibility
In helping children develop a sense of responsibility, it is important that we enable them to understand that the more responsible they become, the more freedom they will enjoy.
It’s all a matter of trust. The more responsibly Mary behaves, the more her parents will trust her; and, the more they trust her, the more freedom they will give her. On the other hand, if Mary abuses her freedom through irresponsible choices, the natural consequence is that some of her privileges will be taken away or reduced. That’s how children learn that personal freedom is the product of responsible behavior–and that lack of freedom is the result of irresponsible behavior.
