Lesson 2: Providing Unconditional Love and Care
Unconditional love involves making a conscious decision to value someone for who she is rather than for what she does. In order to feel esteemed as a human being, every person has a desperate need for that kind of love. Pediatric patients are no exception; and, for many of them, a caring nurse or respiratory therapist may constitute their first experience in receiving the intentional, unconditional regard that can bring joy and hope to their young lives.
The key word is intentionality. Nothing in this Lesson will be new information to care providers. We all know how to give care to children. The problem is that, when we are moving fast and feeling overwhelmed with other responsibilities related to bedside care, it can be easy to overlook our patients’ need for willful compassion.
