Lesson 5: Establishing Professional Boundaries
The relationship between care provider and child is an important factor in clinical care. The treatment interventions prescribed for a child carry with them the potential for intense emotional involvement. Our concern here is for a healthy balance in the relationship between the patient and the person administering those treatment interventions.
How the child feels about the person providing their care has significant impact on the child’s healing process. Does the child feel safe, nurtured, cared about as an individual and not just as another patient? Does the child trust the person providing her care, and what part does the care-provider play in helping to establish this trust? Does this child matter to you? How does this child impact you? What might this child teach you? All these questions and others pertinent to caregiver/patient relationships require consideration of professional boundaries.
