Lesson 6: Calming a Turbulent Situation

Good classroom management is a major objective of teachers who want to provide a positive, productive learning environment in their classrooms. And, clearly, the old “bad apple” concept of simply ridding the classroom of contentious children is not a productive option.

In fact, there is a great deal of concern nowadays among teachers—and certainly among administrators—over the issue of “discretionary placements: the practice of removing students (especially pre-K—2nd grade) from the classroom through suspension or expulsion. Recent research performed at Stanford University confirms the validity of that concern.
