Lesson 5: Bridging the Economic Divide
While the internet has made the entire world a big neighborhood, tremendous differences still exist between the neighbors–one of the largest of which is the economic disparity that exists not only among nations but often among students in the same classroom.
The task of the teacher as an advocate of the child is compounded greatly when the student is a victim of generational poverty (where a student’s family has been in poverty for two generations or longer). The culture of generational poverty is different from that of the middle class, and a primary difference has to do with expectations.
