Lesson 9: Addressing the Bullying Problem

In our current culture, bullying is epidemic, and its impact upon kids is tragic. One-third of teens report being bullied.  Each day, 160,000 kids miss school for fear of being bullied.  Teachers have a responsibility to address the bullying issue and to be proactive in protecting their students against the physical, verbal, and emotional abuse that is commonplace among youth today.

In establishing a bully-free school climate, a good place to begin is with definitions. The type of bullying that most of today’s adults knew when they were kids is now called “traditional bullying.” There are several kinds of traditional bullies: physical bullies, verbal bullies, and social bullies.
