Lesson 6: Instructing Gifted Students
Teaching is one of the most demanding, challenging, and important jobs in the world. One of the greatest challenges involves students who finish their assignment thirty minutes before everyone else and require redirection. Teaching gifted children, while a privilege, is a true labor of love.
Although no universal definition of giftedness exists, the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) defines gifted children as individuals “who demonstrate outstanding levels of aptitude (defined as an exceptional ability to reason and learn) or competence (documented performance or achievement in top 10% or rarer) in one or more domains.” Domains include diverse activities and skills such as mathematics, music, language, painting, dance, and sports.
