ARK President Dr. Glenn Wilkerson spoke before members of the Texas Senate last month to discuss the need for empathetic teaching in schools throughout the state and nation.
Wilkerson testified before the Senate Select Committee on Violence and School Safety July 18 and presented information on empathetic teaching programs as one solution to the problem of school shootings. Wilkerson discussed the important distinction between mental health and emotional health, noting research that shows nearly all school shooters suffer from emotional illness (while only 17% show signs of suffering from mental illness). He encouraged the senate to consider legislation that would require and provide on-going programs to help teachers implement empathetic teaching techniques in schools across the state, helping all students to feel valued and loved.
